Technological solutions for divulgation: Finding human and social purposes on engineering projects

The endemic diversity of animals in the state of Hidalgo is proof of the great environmental diversity which characterizes Mexico, however, because of the human impact on the environment, many of these species are endangered, and several others have disappeared. This article describes the design and implementation of an interactive game designed for the dissemination and awareness about native and endemic fauna from the state of Hidalgo, this project contributes with quality environmental education (SDG 4) and biodiversity conservation (SDG 15). With this in mind, joint collaboration is indispensable, therefore, engineering, through projects which might seem unrelated to conservation efforts, can promote actions in favor of the environment targeted to a more diverse public. This project’s main objective is to bring students and the general public closer to the species that inhabit the central
region of Mexico, encouraging care and conservation. The prototype is based on a riddle format with a time limit challenge, which increases motivation and reward on the participants. The game includes questions about the characteristics of eight different selected species (some of which are strictly endemic or with a wider distribution) seeking to reinforce the learning. The proposed prototype integrates electronic and logical components, which allow a direct interaction with the user and orients it to educational scenarios and scientific divulgation. With this proposal, it is intended to strengthening the local knowledge about biodiversity and promoting distinct actions towards conservation, by using an innovative and adaptable educational resource, for communities and schools alike.
